WCRI Study Finds Provider Networks Improve Claim Outcomes

Back to Regulatory Recap

A new study from the Workers Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) found that injured workers treated in medical provider networks have lower medical and total claim costs, faster access to care, and improved disability outcomes. These findings reinforce the value of networks in improving time to care and influencing overall claim outcomes.

The study examined in‑network and out‑of‑network workers’ compensation claims across 34 states and attributed these results to earlier care and a mix of services, rather than higher overall utilization. WCRI also found that network impact was stronger in urban areas and less in rural areas where access challenges are prevalent. Moreover, state policy choices – such as fee schedules, provider choice rules, and managed care requirements – can influence those outcomes.
