In December of 2024, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed Senate Bill 6635 and Assembly Bill 5745 – two identical bills – that grant all workers in New York the right to file a claim for mental injuries premised upon extraordinary work-related stress incurred on the job.

This law went into effect on January 1st, but now Senate Bill 755 has been introduced, which would limit the presumptions only to first responders, including police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency dispatchers, and other persons certified to provide medical care in emergencies. Furthermore, the new bill would change language to cover mental injuries stemming from a “work-related emergency” instead of mental injuries stemming from stress experienced at work.
