On October 23rd, Healthesystems attended the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission’s Medical Fee Guide Committee meeting.
Maryland has long considered implementing a Pharmacy Fee Guide, but the failure of Senate Bill 306 (2025) left the path forward uncertain. By attending this meeting, Healthesystems gained insight into the Committee’s timeline and intent to revisit pharmacy reimbursement based on study findings keeping us engaged in a process that could reshape pharmacy reimbursement.
During the meeting, it was announced the Prescription Fee Guide is on hold pending a study by the Prescription Drug Affordability Board on workers’ comp medications. Findings will determine next steps and are expected in March 2026, though the timeline is subject to change.
Regarding concerns over PPO network practices, a PPO network advertisement offering providers with injured worker referrals for a 5% fee reduction raised concerns about the direction of care. The committee will review further for appropriateness.
Additionally, the committee will focus on improving access to psychiatric Independent Medical Exams (IMEs), addressing challenges caused by low reimbursement and a shortage of private practitioners.
Furthermore, Chairwoman Maureen Quinn announced her retirement effective December 31, 2025. Asha Jefferson has begun transitioning into the chair role.
The committee will reconvene in the upcoming months to continue discussion on IMEs. Meeting dates will be announced on the Medical Fee Guide Committee website.
