California P&T Committee Reviews Topical Analgesics

Back to Regulatory Recap

Healthesystems attended the California Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee on July 16th, where members reviewed topical analgesics and worked toward developing recommendations for the state’s workers’ compensation formulary.

These meetings serve to stay ahead of potential formulary changes that could impact clinical operations, allowing stakeholders to align strategies and support timely, informed decision making.

The meeting began with the introduction of new members to the committee, bringing fresh perspectives to the ongoing discussions. Members continued discussions on topical analgesics, including lidocaine patches, following prior requests for data on clinical evidence, utilization, and cost.

While no decisions were made, Kevin Gorospe, PharmD, DWC Consultant, will present an expanded formulary list at the next meeting. This list will align with MTUS guidelines and include recommended duration and quantity limits. To streamline the review, members agreed to focus initially on the top five to ten exempt drugs based on utilization.

The next quarterly meeting will take place in October.
