Alabama Senate Bill 1 was recently introduced, proposing workers’ comp benefits for public school teachers.
Historically, if these teachers were injured on the job, they were required to pay out-of-pocket for care and request reimbursement later from the Board of Adjustment. To help administer a workers’ comp program for teachers, this bill would create the Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Program, the Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Trust Fund, and the Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Board.
The bill has already passed the Senate 32-0. If enacted, it would go into effect October 1, 2026.
