Generic Drug Tariffs Announced for 2028

The White House announced that generic drugs imported into the U.S. will continue to face zero tariffs until August 1, 2028, at which point a 100% tariff will take effect, followed by a 200% tariff in August of 2029.

This timeframe was established to spur drug manufacturers to develop generics within the U.S. However, because many generic drugs involve overseas manufacturing, shifting more production to the U.S. could still increase the cost of many generic drugs available in the near term.
