Michigan Proposes Cancer Presumption for Medical Examiners

Back to Regulatory Recap

Michigan House Bill 4764 was introduced, which would create a cancer presumption for certain medical examiners.

The presumption would apply to full-time, part-time or on-call county medical examiners, deputy county medical examiners, and medical examiner investigators who have or had 60 months or more of active service at the time of cancer diagnosis, or if the examiner is or was exposed to the hazards incidental to fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, or subsequent investigation of an incident.

The bill covers any respiratory tract, bladder, skin, brain, kidney, blood, thyroid, testicular, prostate, or lymphatic, ovarian, breast, or non-HPV cervical cancer.

If enacted, this bill would apply to cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2026.
