Generic Drug Tariffs Proposed for 2028

Back to Regulatory Recap

The White House announced that generic drugs imported into the U.S. will face zero tariffs until August 1, 2028, at which point a 100% tariff will take effect, followed by a 200% tariff in August of 2029.

Some claim that this timeframe was created to spur drug manufacturers to develop generics within the U.S. However, because many generic drugs involve overseas manufacturing, this could increase the cost of many generic drugs available in the near future.
