NCCI Explores Workers’ Comp Trends by Industry and State

Back to Regulatory Recap

At its 2026 Annual Insights Symposium, the NCCI highlighted that while lost-time claim frequency continues its long-term decline overall, claim trends vary considerably across industries and jurisdictions.

Since 2021, most industries have experienced average annual declines in lost-time claim frequency of at least 5%. However, three sectors showed little or no improvement in the 2023–2024 preliminary data, including:

  • Health Care: Frequency has remained relatively flat, driven by increased hiring and a recent rise in workplace violence incidents.
  • Office: Return-to-office mandates and an increase in motor vehicle accidents among employees in sales roles have slowed the long-term decline
  • Private Education: An increase in struck-by and injured-by claims has offset broader improvements in claim frequency

Regarding state highlights, Nevada and the District of Columbia are the only NCCI jurisdictions to experience increasing overall claim frequency trends since 2021. Despite these exceptions, NCCI emphasized that there is no evidence of a broad-based reversal in the long-term decline in workers' compensation claim frequency.
