WCI is a nonprofit educational organization for workers’ comp professionals, and their annual conference is one of the biggest events in the country, bringing stakeholders from all over together for networking, information sharing, and educational sessions.
This year’s theme is “WCI Goes Glam – Bold Ideas & Big Impact” and as we strive to share big ideas, with two of our Healthe leaders joining educational presentations that help deliver inspiring insights and education.
Confounding Comorbidities: Practical Insights for Care Management
Healthesystems’ VP of Clinical Services, Silvia Sacalis, PharmD, BS, will join Mark Williams, DC, MBA, DACBOH, Medical Director, The Hartford, to deliver an educational session on the Injury Treatment and Improvement Track.
This session will delve into the practical considerations for managing injured workers with comorbidities, which are commonly seen not only in the general population but also as complicating factors in workers' compensation claims.
The discussion will cover a range of comorbidities including
- Cardiovascular/hypertension
- Mental health conditions
- Substance use (tobacco and alcohol)
- Obesity
- Diabetes
Attendees will gain insights into the complexities of medical and pharmacy management in these cases, including a focus on drug-drug and drug-disease interactions that must be considered to ensure effective and safe treatment plans.

Early Warning: Spotting Delayed Recovery Risk Before a Claim Deteriorates
Healthesystems’ AVP of Product Analytics and Business Strategy, Mike Theis, will join a panel presentation on the AI and Technology Track, along with Moderator Kim Wiswell, Director, Managed Care Solutions, Gradient AI, and co-panelists:

This session explores how the factors that drive poor outcomes, such as comorbidities, psychosocial barriers, and claim complexity, are often present long before a claim is filed. This discussion will open with a brief presentation of real, data-backed findings on the measurable impact these factors have on claim duration, medical spend, and return-to-work outcomes, giving attendees practical insights they can apply immediately.
From there, panelists will explore how new technologies can identify claims at elevated risk for delayed recovery within days of first notice of loss (FNOL) and what patterns these models detect. Attendees will leave with an understanding of what's now possible with AI-driven claim triage, how these tools provide adjusters with new insights, and practical recommendations for capturing additional data at first report of injury that can further improve early identification.
