Georgia House Bill 991 was introduced, which would classify nurses who pick up shifts on mobile apps as independent contractors.
Apps such as CareRev, Clipboard Health, and NurseDash let nurses and other healthcare professionals pick up shifts via a mobile app, similar to other gig economy apps like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash.
By classifying such healthcare workers as independent contractors, this bill would deny them various benefits, such as unemployment and workers’ comp. The bill does note that the technology platforms in question must provide occupational accident insurance, but the bill does not provide significant detail to what the insurance must cover.
